The DVAA needs a Secretary for 2018

Dear Friends:

I am writing you today to ask for your help.  As you may know the 2018 DVAA Election is about to be held (with votes tallied during our Annual Business Meeting on Sunday December 17th) but we do not have a Secretary for you to vote on.

I have spoken with many of you about the unfilled Secretary position but no one has stepped forward.  I understand that; we all lead busy lives.  Even so I can’t help but think this constitutes a sort of crisis for our club.  For a start, the DVAA Bylaws mandate that our Board of Directors include a Secretary (see DVAA_Bylaws.pdf)   Moreover, our Secretary has stood at the very heart of our club for as long as I have been a member, although I don’t doubt that this has always been true.  In either case I’d be hard to imagine the club without.

Having held a number of positions in the club I can unequivocally state that my stint as Secretary was the best.  Now I won’t lie to you, it does take a fair amount of effort to pull together the newsletter—about five to six hours a month when I did it, a bit less now since almost none of the newsletters are sent out by mail—but even so I found the process more than a little rewarding.  The best part, though, was the chance to work with and meet my fellow members.  I should also mention that I became Secretary in my second year and that it was instrumental to forming some of the best and most important friendships of my life.

Anyway, enough of the rah rah rah.  Please (PLEASE!) put your name forward.  Or failing that, I am open to any suggestions, including—and I hate to even say it—killing the newsletter.  Indeed, the newsletter constitutes the bulk of the Secretaries’ work but as a matter of form it’s not strictly required, so if we had to it could go.  For that matter, I would rather have a committee chair go unfilled if one of those folks were willing to shift over.  Again, we’ve reached that point where any and all ideas are on the table….
