The monthly DVAA Astrophotography (AP) Workshop is a free, open session for participants to discuss and share images and techniques. The AP Workshop generally falls on the Wednesday before the monthly DVAA General Meeting.
The first half hour of the AP Workshop, from approximately 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm will be a Beginner's Q&A session. So, if you're new to astrophotography, please join us at 7:00 pm and ask away. All levels of questions are welcome. The regular part of the AP Workshop will start at around 7:30 pm. Participants are encouraged to join early for the introduction of new attendees, a special topic of interest from time to time, a Show & Tell session, and for Q&A.
We are privileged at this month's workshop to have with us, guest speaker, Nico Carver, to present his talk, "The Past 10 Years of Amateur Astrophotography". In this talk, Nico will weave his personal experiences with astrophotography together with the most important developments in the hobby over the past ten years.
Some of the topics that will be addressed include:
- Image processing and software
- Amateur discoveries
- Remote observatories
- Group imaging
- YouTube / social media
- Gear (sensors, filters, smart scopes, etc.)
By the end, Nico hopes to leave you excited about the current state of amateur astrophotography, and how accommodating the hobby is to a huge range of people and their particular interests.
Nico discovered the joys of deep sky astrophotography in 2016, and it quickly became an obsession. He has taught Photoshop professionally at the university and nationally-attended webinar level and, from 2019-2022, worked at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, where he helped preserve the early history of astrophotography through Project PHaEDRA. Starting in 2023, Nico went full-time with astrophotography education, with his primary mission being to help beginners get started in the hobby. Nico’s favorite objects to photograph are nebulae.

After the presentation, there will be a Show & Tell session where participants are encouraged to share images they've taken or processed recently, and to discuss or show astrophotography equipment, or projects they're working on. Other topics of discussion may include image acquisition tips, processing workflows, hardware and software setups, and other aspects of deep sky object or planetary imaging.
