October 14 - Joint meeting of the Delaware Valley Amateur Astronomers and the Southeast Pennsylvania Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (SEPS-AAPT)
Speaker: Dr. Joey Neilsen, Villanova University
“The Shadow of a Sleeping Giant”
Supermassive black holes light up the distant and local universe, but the Milky Way galaxy is remarkably quiet: our supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), is orders of magnitude fainter than its extragalactic counterparts. I will discuss efforts to study this sleeping giant (including work by a recent Villanova grad), culminating in the recent discovery of the shadow of the black hole by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration.
