Besides providing the light and energy necessary for maintaining life on Earth, the Sun is responsible for many phenomena that affects our daily lives. The (variable) Sun´s energy output (solar wind, explosive events such as flares and coronal mass ejections) is responsible for visually-striking phenomena like the auroras but also (possibly) for that time your GPS got you lost. Understanding and anticipating how these unusual solar conditions can disrupt our day-to-day constitutes the core of what it´s called Space Weather. In this presentation we will discuss the different ways solar activity can impact technology and humans, and what scientist are currently doing to mitigate such effects.
